Yes, there has been an absence of new posts this last week - i apologise!
I've been ill....ugh....
anyway, rather than post anything unique or original, I thought i'd reference this brilliant video clip from the university of kansas faculty:
it demonstrates perfectly the social and ethnographic impact of the web - the growth of web 2.0 usage and how we, as bloggers , bleaders, photographers, amateur videographers (etc) have as much a role to play in the future of the web as larger corporations do.

Well it’s another week and I guess it is time I added another one of my clinically insane rants and raves without any particular direction. Anyways from the events that have recently transpired I have to say that I’m really feeling this bad karma thing. In fact I am wondering what more can go wrong in my life right now since I lost my phone this weekend and I really loved that phone too. Still when life is good I will be able to look back on a month like this with a wry smile and be happy that the bad times only make the good times feel all the sweeter. Everything feels so much better when you have truly earned it and nothing can really compare with that feeling, the feeling of complete satisfaction, if just for a little while. This is because the feeling will never last because as always that feeling will go after time like quenching your thirst. Sooner or later the need to be satisfied will arise all over again.
Satisfaction is such a curious concept and one that is so hard to quantifiably define. People who are hard to satisfy and always want more we often label as greedy and other people who we regard as easy to satisfy we regard as lazy, both of which are traits deemed undesirable. So where is the middle ground here? At what point in our modern society do we regard a person to have a healthy satisfaction? Will we ever be able to answer a question such as this with the world as it is today, is there even an answer? I definitely don’t have an answer. I just like to ask the questions. After all no one likes a know it all show off. I guess I would just like to know at what point I should be happy with what I have and leave enough for the next guy, I mean despite being blessed in so many ways (great family and friends, still healthy, gainfully employed etc) why do I always feel unsatisfied and in need of something more. I doubt I will ever be smart enough to figure it out anyway, I mean eternal happiness is not something that happens everyday. I will probably just carry on hording all I can in this world like everyone else and regret the consequences of my actions later.
Still this brings me to my point and a tribute to my favourite comic book character of all time, The Silver Surfer whose story is based around these ideals. The basic premise of the Silver Surfer is that he was born Norrin Radd on the planet of Zenn-La which was home to a race of people who felt they had obtained everything their society needed and it was perfect. Norrin Radd was different to all the other people on Zenn-La as he always felt an emptiness to his existence, a lack of meaning to the civilization’s perpetual lifestyle of debauchery. Knowing the greatness of his forefathers was followed by a race gone idle and without the will or desire to move on, happy to live on the past glories it has achieved upset him greatly. This all ended the day Galactus came to their world, the people of Zenn-La were always secure in the knowledge that they were the greatest civilization in the universe and nothing could harm them. Galactus though could not be stopped and in an attempt to save his world Norrin Radd flew out to Galactus to bargain for the survival of his home world. Galactus being an all powerful deity had no concept of good and evil and although he didn’t want to hurt anyone, his insatiable hunger needed to be satisfied and he could not spend time looking for planets without intelligent life to feed on. So in order to save his planet and all other planets with which intelligent life resides in the universe, Norrin Radd agreed to become the herald of Galactus and spend eternity scouting planets for Galactus to feed on. Thus the Silver Surfer was borne. The Silver Surfer then came across Earth during his travels and despite being met (in general) with hate, fear and violence he also met people who were as selfless and honourable as he was. This was why he saw fit to turn against his master to save us from annihilation at the hands of Galactus. I guess I love the story of the Silver Surfer because it covers so many concepts that fascinate me on many different levels like generosity, perfection, greed, laziness, apathy, good, evil and intolerance. It does not surprise me that the godfather of comic books Stan Lee rates the Silver Surfer as his favourite and greatest creation. This summer brings the introduction of the Silver Surfer to the cinema in the new Fantastic Four film and I hope they do him justice but I’m not holding out hope considering the first film had a made for the kids feel and was a ninety minute advert as to why Jessica Alba should only be clothed in skin tight lycra (this is by no means a complaint on my part) but hardly oscar worthy if you know what I mean. So after the inevitable disappointment this summer I just wanted to make my point that there is a reason why I think the Silver Surfer is the greatest comic character ever.
That is all I have to say for today if you have made it to the end and have no interest in the Silver Surfer or the new Fantastic four movie, I’m really sorry for wasting your time and its probably not the first time either. But Hey I figured if you guys will read about Volvo drag racing, Wile. E. Coyote, Cyberslacking amongst other things, you’ll read about anything.
I hear an eerie silence, probably cause you all left the building a long time ago……………
Is that the rustling of tumbleweed being blown by I hear……………….
